The main premise of this project was to work as part of a small design team to create a mass manufactured drone. All aspects of manufacture had to be considered from manufacturing processes, unit cost, cycle times and shipping/transport costs.
The Mountain Goat is unique for its ability to land on almost any uneven surface. This is possible as the legs are independent from one another when landing, meaning they can contact ground objects of different height without destabilising each other. The legs are then locked in place and the drone is stable until it needs to take off again.
The arms holding the propellors and the legs are constructed from carbon fibre, reducing weight whilst remaining strong. The feet are coated in a sticky rubber to aid with grip.
